This second book in the Pulse series is even more exciting and thought provoking than the first! The story continues, focusing on the same three girls as they attempt to adapt to their new lives after the pulse. The situations they find themselves in, the people they meet, the dilemmas they face are realistically portrayed and absolutely believable. Thoughtful questions are raised about survival, Christianity, and Constitutional rights. Some eye-opening true facts are revealed from US history that might surprise you if you aren't aware of them. There are great quotes from the Bible, as well as from our founding fathers about freedom and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. The characters are believable as we see their good and bad choices, realistic conversations, and actions- and we relate to them and care for them because we understand their motives even when we don't agree with them. The importance of having skills is made clear in this book- anything from sewing to knowing how to use weapons could help you survive- as is the importance of banding together with others to help each other survive. An important element to the plot is the repeated question: What does it mean to be a Christian? There are believers and nonbelievers in the story and everyone is struggling with what happened after the pulse. I really enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to the third one. Another thought provoking mind searching book could very easily be our future with a different scenario but basically we could be surviving off the grid without what we think as "our basic necessities. Everything from Internet to piped in water, cell phones, medicines,stores, for food clothing etc etc. life as we know it gone. How would we survive? Which among us would survive?
Four months after the pulse destroys all electronics, others have joined the family and are making a compound which they need to guard. The 16 yr olds struggle to cope with the new normal in a very realistic way. Make me want to be even more prepared than we are. When I got to the end, I said, "What? That's the end? No! Can't wait for next book.
Oh My Goodness! Can't wait for the conclusion. Resilience continues where Pulse, the first novel in the series, left off with the lives of three teenagers after an EMP attack. L.R. Burkhard is weaving an amazing story about very real life possibilities. Resilience tells about their continuing struggle for food and shelter, but now there is a new threat- enemy soldiers on US soil. How will they win over these insurmountable odds? Resilience was another page turner. I was up all night finishing it. I can't wait for the conclusion.
Rarely do I find myself drawn into the life of characters in a book. But Linore does just that! I am amazed that I found myself, a Pastor of a small Church, loving a novel written primarily for teenage girls. I had the hairs on the back of my neck standing at attention more than once, I found myself happy and angry at various times because of what was happening! I'm surprised my didn't crack from the grip I had on it at times! Linore also does an excellent job of adhering to Biblical truths and weaves the Gospel message throughout this great book! There are also many practical preparedness examples as well! When I started reading this book (Defiance) last week I found myself overwhelmed by the desire to read the first two again! So I did! I don't believe you will be disappointed in reading this series! I just hope there are more to come!

In the first book of this series, Pulse, I was kept awake until the wee hours flipping pages as fast as I could. Pulse was a fast moving story about three teenage girls, each in a different living situation, whose lives had been drastically affected immediately after the devastation from an electromagnetic pulse, which destroys all electrical equipment and leaves the nation without electricity. The detail in this book gives the reader pause to consider, "would I be ready if the U.S. suffered an electromagnetic pulse?"
Resilience, the second book in the series, was even better! Resilience is the continued story of these three teenagers and includes the lives of many more people as the story develops. Now the three girls are trying to survive long after millions have died and the situation has become even more hostile. They not only have to struggle to find food and shelter, they have a new struggle -- enemy armies have invaded. How will they stay alive? Every scene is exciting and filled with action and intrigue. It moves at an even faster pace than book one! Just know that you will be on the edge of your seat all the way through this book.
Even though this series is written from the perspective of these three teenage girls, the story is not just for the YA audience. Any age group will find it fascinating, exciting and informative.
If you love reading a good story, don't just buy this series, buy all of her books. She has a gift that makes every reader glad she writes!
